Odessa Odessa Odessa
Odesa is a beautiful city on the northwest coast of the Black Sea. It is the third largest Ukrainian city after Kyiv and Kharkiv, a major industrial, cultural, scientific, and resort center. Its name of Odessa drawn from the old Greek port close to Odessos appeared only recently. The current city was found by Catherine II in 1794, when the Russian empress decided that the opening of a port on the Black Sea was necessary to the country to develop its relations with Europe. Odessa is constantly developing and represents today a dynamic city and an important seaside resort. It is moreover a remarkable city by its architecture and its diversified environment of large port. From the central part of the city, a monumental stairway – somehow the symbol of the city – descends to the waterfront. This stairway used to carry the name of Richelieu, from Armand Emmanuel du Plessis de Chinon, Duke of Richelieu, a French politician (1766-1822), who served in the Russian army against the Turks and who was nominated Governor of the province of Odesa (1803-1814) by the Tsar Alexander I.
