Lviv
Lviv... An ancient picturesque city, which Prince Danylo Halystky founded in the middle of the 13th century on the site of an old settlement and named it in honor of his son Lev. The first annalistic mention of the "city of Lev" (this is what the city's name stands for) dates back to 1256. Since the old times a golden lion has been guarding the city gate on Lviv's coat of arms and there is a great number of sculptures of the "king of animals" in the streets of the city.
The heart of Lviv is extremely elegant Rynok ("Market") Square, the ensemble of which has been formed in the 16th - 18th centuries. Each of 44 houses is unique and has its own legend, mystery or real story resembling a fairy tale behind. This is why the central part of the city was announced to be a historical and architectural preserve and was included into the UNESCO's World Heritage List.
