Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Monastery. The monastery was established in the mid-11thcentury A.D. It is one of the most ancient monasteries of Eastern Slavonic states. It has been the centre of Eastern Orthodox Christianity in Eastern Europe. The site is 70 acres in size with 11 Churches and religious structures. Here you will see the golden domed temples and old frescos preserved on the cave walls.
This monastery is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and attracts people from all over the world. The territory is divided into two parts: on the upper Lavra you will find magnificent churches, interesting museums and exhibitions, while the lower part of Lavra is a Cave Monastery.
During this tour you will visit underground labyrinths of caves with mummies of monks, the Museum of Treasures displaying the rich Scythian Gold collectionthat is up to 5,000 years old. The gem of the collection is the famous “Golden pectoral” (chest decoration of a Scythian king). There are scenes from the life of the Scythians on the pectoral. You can see ancient oriental golden decorations found in the burial of Sarmatian queen. There are the works made by Old Russian goldsmiths, craftsmen 14th – 16th centuries in the museum collection.
The monastery is located on picturesque hills and from the top of the Bell Tower you will delight in the view over the golden-domed monastery complex and the marvelous banks of Dnipro river.
